Moral Obligations Fox News Style
I should change the name of my blog to "Bill O'Reilly Bugs the Absolute Crap Out of Me, What Say You?" because I'm gonna talk about him again. It's my own fault for voluntarily watching his show lately. It's like passing a car wreck...you can't help but look even when you know you shouldn't.
Today's news reports that Teri Hatcher came forward and admitted that she was molested by an uncle when she was 5 years old, when she discovered that a 14 year old girl had committed suicide after being molested by the same man. (Link below). I applaud her for putting aside her personal anguish to help with the conviction of a child molester.
Enter Bill O'Reilly and his own personal bloviating platform, The O'Reilly Factor. His guest was psychotherapist Sheenah Hankin to whom he hypothesized the following: Understanding that a child would not want to come forward, not being emotionally mature enough to handle the reprocussions of outing their molester, but once that child becomes an adult, is it their moral obligation to identify a known child molester in order to save any would be future victims? Sheenah Hankin agreed with him and stated that she has a moral and legal obligation to advise her patients to do so. His exact words:
Message? No one is going to hold it against them when they're five years old but they might hold it against them when they're an adult. It is the victims fault for any would be future victims of the molester. O'Reilly and his guest might have well just come out and said that it was Teri Hatcher's fault that another girl was molested and consequently committed suicide because Hatcher didn't come forward when she turned eighteen.
How can a victim be held responsible for a criminal's behavior? How can anyone be held responsible for an adult's behavior? And why, oh why do I continue to indulge my morbid curiosity by watching The O'Reilly Factor?

applauded Hatcher for coming forward, and urged other victims to do the same. "You should summon up the courage to do it, because Ms. Hatcher's testimony put this guy away for 14 years. No one is going to hold it against someone who was molested when they were five years old."
