Then Benjamin Franklin Rolled Over in His Grave

The U.S. Senate renewed the Patriot Act by an 89-10 vote. The bill also made permanent 14 of the original 16 temporary provisions. I'm losing what little faith I've been holding out for the Democratic party. You've let me down guys and gals. You suck. I expected it from the Repulbican Senate...not you. You're supposed to be better than that. I must restate it, you suck right out! The only Senators not currently on my suck list are Jim Jeffords of Vermont,Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, Robert Byrd of West Virginia, Daniel Akaka of Hawaii, Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Carl Levin of Michigan, Patty Murray of Washington and Ron Wyden of Oregon.

The new and improved, great-taste-less-filling Patriot Act also includes a dandy provision in there that would make it more difficult for meth labs to obtain their ingredients by requiring pharmacies to sell, what were once over the counter cold medicines, from behind the counter. What in the world? What does that have to do with the war on terror? Didn't some of us predict this when the Patriot Act was originally drafted and passed in the wake of 9-11? Yep. We did. We predicted that the terrorism laws would eventually be applied to just about any crime. And, well, there ya have it. Comtrex and DayQuil are now off the shelves! Our national security depends on it...or something.

Kudos to the ten Senators who took a stand to protect the liberties of the American people by voting 'no' on this violation of our freedom. I leave you with a quote worth pondering...

“Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”~Benjamin Franklin November 11, 1755

They are squandering a perfect opportunity to unite and gain some ground. It's a damn shame.
